FREEDOM!!

Mr. Mehta, a respected personality in the area was invited as the chief guest in the republic day celebrations. He, no doubt was the most eligible person for this ‘responsibility’. Watching himself in the mirror once again he said, “Lets go. I don’t want to be late.”

His son was already waiting at the driver seat when both of them came out of the den. JAY MEHTA was just into his job and wasn’t interested in the independence day celebrations. But no doubt he was not going to go against his ‘patriotic’ father. So, they went straight to the JAWAHAR GROUND.

Surprisingly for JAY there were many people waiting for the program to start and more importantly most were school or college students. For the first time he felt the inspiration his father was. He glanced at his father who was by now out of the car and proceeding to the stage and whispered sorry for not respecting the inspiration. Suddenly the independence day was beginning to feel good.

……………….15 mins after………..

The program had started and there were some songs and plays before his father’s speech. He was waiting curiously for the speech. He heard about the inspirational speeches, how he delivers them and how people get inspired with his speeches. But this was the first time he was going to hear it live.

The announcer spoke out Mr. Mehta’s name and he was on his way to deliver yet another inspirational speech.

“Dear countrymen. We are here to celebrate our freedom. Not just to celebrate, but also to remember the people who worked hard for it. We, the Indians are a free regime now. Free to work hard for OURSELVES.” He pressed hard on the word ‘ourselves’.

“And we have to work hard to make India a great country. To make ourselves a better life. To make India proud. JAI HIND!!!”

And the ground was filled with voice of the national anthem as soon as he unfurled the national flag. It is always a proud moment for every person to watch the national flag of his country fluttering. JAY was also feeling the same. He was happy now that he had attended his dad’s speech.

They went back home. He went to his room and switched on some metallica songs. He was listening to them on a high volume.

“JAY a lil low son.”

“sorry mom.” He made the volume a lil’ low. Maybe he was bored or maybe he was not in mood to listen to mettallica , he switched off the stereo. He went to the hall and switched on the T.V- changed the channel to an English movie channel. It was showing ‘The Lord Of The Rings’. One of JAY’s favorite and thus JAY was wanting to watch it.

The door bell rang and in came Mahesh uncle. He was a colleague of Mr. Mehta. JAY turned to him.

“Hi, Mahesh uncle….” And his father interrupted.

“Atleast say JAI HIND today.”

JAY was a little bit angry but didn’t mind.

“JAI HIND uncle.”

“JAI HIND” And he walked in the guest room with Mr. Mehta.

Time was passing smoothly. After an hour or so, his father came out and turned the channel to a ‘more patriotic’ one. It was showing the old Hindi patriotic songs. JAY was pissed with this controlling behavior.

“What is this ?”

“this what?”

“why did you change the channel?”

“today is independence day.”

“so??”

“so you should listen to some patriotic songs.”

“and why is that?”

“because I am saying this.”

“plz. the movie is about to finish.”

“no”

“why cant I ?”

“you should obey ur father.”

He didn’t say anything. He knew he had already missed the movie. But then he thought “IS THIS FREEDOM?”

PS: HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!! to both PAKISTAN AND INDIA

  1. i think its not to be called as freedom.such type of interruptions are needed only when anyone don’t give respect to d nation.
    JAI HIND,VANDE MATRAM
    & happy independence dayfrom my side too.

  2. cool bhai….wen i started reading it i thought k tuney kya “crap” likha hai ….lekin last line hi saara matlab samjha gayin yar….good job….

  3. That is Freedom.. too much of anything is not good.. everything has a limit.. and JAY ( and no JAI..)’s limit was controlled by his father..

    think about it.. Ever Nation is free.. but still governed by government.. every one of is free.. stil we have rules to follow..

    Did this JAY ever wonder Y his name was JAY?!?

    Good post though.. well written!
    [ No clue if i made sense..]

  4. I am really confused and not sure whether his father really hampered Jay’s freedom or not!!

    Its the freedom of one to watch whatever he likes. If he doesn’t like to watch patriotic thing, its his choice. But with freedom, comes duties…! And that is the most important thing.

    So the post offers a lot of debate and that is very much essential…!

    PS — {to Asmita} I don’t knw abt Jay, but I was wondering why his name was JAY and not JAI??

  5. It is as if you left it incomplete…i mean don’t know…the outlook of jay and his father are completely different..yet both the things are called Freedom….i am confused too!!

    hmm…both are right in thier own aspects…( the thing called generation gap is clearly noticiable here..i guess!!)…moreover watching /listening to the patriotic songs doesn’t mean you are patriotic…
    One should contribute to once nation…then that is patriotism in real sence..

    Well nice topic..

  6. @vishaka
    well ..thats wat i think too.

    @himanshu
    thnx bro …..just the last thought made me to write this ….thnx for appreciating bro . :)

    @asmita
    i agree too much of anything is never good…..but lots of young ppl have this problem wid their parents …..about being patriotic……thats wat i wanted to depict…..although it can b a debating topic….wid different opinions ..

    @intutius
    “But with freedom, comes duties…!”…duties ..if at all in the situation was to respect his father…which he did ….and also respecting his nation …watching english movie on independence day is it wrong ??

    @asmita $ intutius
    JAY and JAI sound same and mean same….if we go by the hindi names…for english JAI may not be a name…..although i used JAY just to differentiate B/W JAI of JAI HIND…(it doesnt make any sense though :P )

    @sahiti
    its the question that rose up in my mind….(IS THIS FREEDOM?) …i wanted to keep it to the readers to decide…..may be thats y u feel it is incomplete……
    ya it is part of the generation gap ….but we have to deal wid it ….and both generations have to be more understandable….

    n for me patriotism is the same way u defined it …..

    thnx :)

  7. watching english movie on independence day is it wrong ??

    Surely not if you talk legally. But yes its wrong if u talk morally.
